Seeing an elder—someone who took care of you, was always there for you, and has been a constant presence in your life—begin to decline is hard. Coming to the realization that the time when we all must return to our God may be sooner rather than later is even harder. And making the difficult decisions necessary to put an estate in order so that the people you love are spared unnecessary stress and headaches can feel like the hardest part of all.

That was where our family found ourselves after my uncle’s Parkinson’s diagnosis threw us for a loop. It forced us to confront the inevitable and one of life’s two certainties: death and taxes.
